How and Why We Read
Check out this short video by John Green before we meet again next week.
While we won't be reading the same books he is discussing this year, he does a pretty good job explaining the reasons behind good reading and writing. My goal this year is to bring you beyond the typical summarizing most folks do when they write a paper. I want your writing to be not only free from grammatical errors, but engaging, thoughtful, and fun for me to read. :) Good writing changes the world.
Most of you have sat in on my classes before, so you are familiar with many of the literary devices Green is mentioning in this short video. If not, we will get you caught up!
Critical analysis will be the primary venue for our writing this year in Advanced Composition. Further, we will ask you to learn to tie together more than one text. This is why I will have you working on current events, reading other articles, and writing about multiple novels throughout the year. You will want to keep good notes. When we look at I Am Malala later this year, we will be comparing it to the Kite Runner. You cannot skip readings. It won't be easy to fake these readings. We will continue to compare and contrast these novels throughout the year. You are going to have to do the work. But I promise that you will get a big return on your investment. :)
