September 4th Class Review
Our class today focused on MLA formatting, which is the standard documentation style for all English and Humanities courses. From now on, all of your papers will need to follow this model. Remember, 12pt Times New Roman font, double-spaced, heading on the left corner, page number and last name in the right corner, and parenthetical citations.
We also held our first literary circle, which went really well! I was surprised at the thoughtful questions that were asked. We have a couple of students that need a little help here preparing for their position, but I hope after yesterday's meeting, those kinks will be worked out. You must do the readings. Your team is counting on you to do your part.
For homework this week, I handed out an essay called, "Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior" by Amy Chua. Please read this article along with section 2 of The Joy Luck Club. Write a response to these readings that somehow compares the two or puts them into a conversation with each other. I'd like for you to begin putting differing ideas together in your writing, so this is your first practice. Now, you can use first-person here in this since it is a personal response. Consider Chua's argument and how Waverly and her mother's relationship are portrayed. What similarities do you see? What pitfalls can you note? What is your opinion of this type of parenting? Remember to use textual evidence from both of these sources to back your position! This response should be about a page long.
