House Challenge #2
We discussed Rhetoric in class yesterday, learning the three major appeals: Logos (logical appeal), Ethos (credibility), and Pathos (emotional appeal). A good writer uses all three appeals in their persuasion, so it's worth noting for our own development as writers. However, once you begin to look closely at the arguments around you, whether they are advertisements, political speeches, or as our class examples showed with popular television, you begin to see that not all language is weighted the same. This does not mean that messages are inherently wrong. But sometimes our responses are emotional, not logical or credible. Memes are prime examples of this. While many might dismiss memes as just another fun part of social media, I ask you to be keenly aware of the rhetorical messages present. What does the image ask of you? What about the text? How do these things together get you to respond?
For your house challenge this week, I'd like for each member of your team to send me an example of an ad, article, meme, or speech that utilizes all three rhetorical appeals. I will award points to each team based on the participation of their group members (1 point for each person contributing an example, and 1 point for each appeal explained in their chosen piece.) This means each person in your group can earn up to 4 points. If your team has 3 members, you could earn a total of 12 points for this challenge.
Good luck! I can't wait to see what you come up with!
You may text me, email me, or bring in a copy. I have received three responses already today. One team isn't going down without a fight!
