September 18th
Class,
This week, please finish up your essay for The Joy Luck Club. That prompt is already on the blog, so go back and review if you have forgotten. :) You do not have a literary circle to prepare for this week, and you do not have any other readings. I want you to focus on your essay, incorporating the four different types of sentences in it, and using descriptive writing. Please also update your Grammar notebooks. I will be taking a look at these in about three weeks, checking your work from the first 9 weeks of classes.
We will spend a couple of weeks reading OWMC, but will quickly progress into our next novel, Things Fall Apart. If you do not have this novel yet, go ahead and order it.
When you turn in your essay, please include your literary circle work. Your essay is worth 50 points. Your literary circles for JLC are also 50 points. Your Grammar notebook is worth 50 points for every 9 weeks. These are a lot of points, so please take them seriously. Review "Things I'm Picky About" before submitting your work, check with Grammarly, and proof-read before you turn it in.
I hope you've learned new things about Asia, the Chinese cultures, and how family relationships are influenced and shaped by culture. Our next stop is Africa, where we will examine postcolonialism, government, life experiences, and trauma.
