August 28th Class Assignment
Hi Folks,
We took the literary terms quiz today, and it revealed that more work needs to be done in this area. That is fine. I prefer mastery over regurgitating information. This means we will continue to have a few more assignments in this area to give us more practice. :)
For homework this week, you have a bit more work to do. We are moving into the full semester and the workload will reflect a week's worth of homework, so please don't try to start this up on Monday before class.
1. Read section one of The Joy Luck Club.
2. Read the two short essays in OWMC that were assigned for last week.
3. If you haven't finished the Amy Tan worksheet, finish that.
4. Write three haikus on the handout I gave you. :) Have fun here.
5. Find a current event that both focuses on China and somehow connects to our reading. I'm hoping you begin to learn how to bridge two texts into a conversation with each other.
6. Prepare for your literary circle. (I'd do this while reading :) )
Class today focused on Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism. Your team points will come from the examples you find in The Joy Luck Club that somehow reflect one of these philosophies. This means you need to find a line or a scene that reveals one of these philosophies (make sure you use MLA citations), name it, and explain how this particular scene or quote can be read through Confucianism, Daoism, or Buddhism. For each well-explained and correct example, you will earn one point. You can earn up to 10 points per person on your team. This could be a game-changer if you are willing to do the work.
